Buttery Smooth

Yesterday, I got a new GPU.

I've still been making Skyrim videos. I completed Lillia's story, hopefully satisfactorily, and have begun a new one - Glimmer. I'll expand on my thoughts of Lillia in a future post. I have also ventured into the world of live-streaming, not something I had considered viable before - not being one to monologue. But having made quite a number of videos now (approaching 100), I have started to, if not master, at least progress in this particular skill.

Now, the thing about VR is it's GPU intensive, modded Skyrim VR insanely so. And then add on to that the streaming software, and further software to add an overlay into the VR so that I could see any chat, and it's too much for the 3080. Not enough VRAM.

I got myself a 4080 Super (partly as a birthday present to myself). Well, I eventually got it - DPD messed up the delivery somewhat - and squished it into the computer. The difference in the livestream was night and day. Beautifully smooth. There are places where it can't increase the fps much because there are other issues going on and even a 4090 wouldn't dent it (oh, for a 4090, but that is way out of my budget). It is, of course, a faster and more capable card, but, boy, does that extra VRAM make a difference! The livestream ended after an hour and a half with SteamVR crashing and not Skyrim for a change. I was trying out a new quest mod, the Forgotten City, and I just hope that it wasn't that that crashed it.

And rendering - the 4080 Super has made quite a difference in the rendering time. As I have started to add some AI-aided motion blur to smooth out the footage and make it an easier viewing experience (as Buzz Lightbeer on YouTube might say), renders have got a little lengthy.

You may guess from the last paragraph that my editing skills have been sharpening up a bit. So much so, in fact, that I bought the Studio version of DaVinci Resolve. And DaVinci isn't a subscription service, as many are, you pay once and you have it. As of writing, that includes upgrades.

And so my focus has still been on Skyrim. Still story-telling, albeit of a different kind, but every now and again I feel that itch to look again at Wounded Watchman and see if I can spot the 'thing' that is missing. It's just out of reach, like that word on the tip of your tongue.
